A Day in the Life of… Alan

Another month means we are sharing a new Day in the Life article. This month we put a spotlight on a new member of our team… Alan, who is our new tyre fitter. We had a catch up with him to find out how he got into tyre fitting and what he gets up to when he isn’t in the workshop or out on the road helping our drivers get to their pickups and deliveries.

What made you get into this industry?

My Dad was a truck driver, so I am no stranger to big trucks. I started out washing the trucks before their MOTs and whilst doing that, I was taught how to use the tools and started doing some of the repair work on some of the vehicles.

I started looking after 3 specific trucks and we had a guy come in to change and fix the tyres. Working with him made me decide that I wanted to learn to do that.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I am based at Canford Inert Facility as we have a workshop there where we service and MOT all of our vehicles.

My role is quite a responsive one, so I don’t really have a typical day. We use a software system that keeps track of all the vehicles and the tyres, I can log on from my phone, which means I can be out in the workshop working on other things but still able to keep an eye on the trucks out on the road. This software will tell me if there is something wrong with a truck, so I will know if a truck tyre has got a puncture before the driver knows.

When this happens, I jump in my van and meet them somewhere to try to fix the tyre at the roadside so that the driver is able to continue with their day.

If I am not out and about responding to tyre problems, I am here (at Canford) in the workshop checking the tyres of the trucks that are being serviced or due their MOT. Before a truck goes in for its MOT, I like to check its tyres and make note of which ones need replacing. That way I can get on and order them and they can be here and ready to be replaced by the time the MOT is done. This means we can get the truck out on the road quicker to get more deliveries and collections done.

What excites you most about working for Avon Material Supplies?

Working with AMS is a new experience. I have spent most my life around trucks, but previously I have done a lot of work on trailers. So, I am excited about working at AMS because I am able to continue learning and work on some new vehicle types.

What makes AMS different from other companies?

The atmosphere at work and the hours that I work. We get a lot of work done, and we are a focused team, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun. There is a lot of banter around the workshop and in the offices, and it is quite a chilled environment to work in.

And the hours I work here mean I am able to have a work life balance; they understand the importance of having that and so I can work more sociable hours and get home to my kids each evening.

Describe yourself in 3 words

I would say shy, comical and proud; I definitely take pride in my company van, I make sure it is clean and looked after, after all it is representing the company.

Everyone at work calls you Yogi, why?

When I started in the tyre trade I was given 2 nicknames. I decided to go with Yogi because I am a bit of a bear really; cuddly and I like food.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know

I am a pretty open book to be honest, so that’s a tough one. I am addicted to having tattoos done. I currently have 14, 2 of which were done recently.
