A Day in the Life of Ivan, our Sales Executive - Avon Materials Supplies

A Day in the Life of Ivan, our Sales Executive

From meeting new clients to managing businesses that have been with us for years, Ivan is more than just a ‘salesperson’, he knows the waste industry like the back of his hand and his experience shines through when you speak to him. We caught up with Ivan to have a chat with him about what he gets up to a ‘normal’ day working for AMS.

Tell us a little bit about you…

I am the Sales Executive for AMS working across all our waste and recycling services for commercial customers, I deal with wheelie bin sales, skips, compactors, hazardous waste and much more!

I’ve been working for Avon Material Supplies since March 2021, so I’m relatively new in the grand scheme of things, however definitely not a newbie to the industry. I’ve been working within the waste industry for 22 years, since 2000!

What does a typical day look like for you?

No day is the same for me at AMS, I am always out and about meeting new clients or having zoom calls with businesses to discuss their waste needs. A lot has changed since the pandemic so a lot more is done virtually.

If I am not driving around the South West, then I will be in the office generating or following up leads. An important part of my job is to get businesses to change their mindset about the waste and recycling they are generating.

What are the most interesting businesses you have visited as part of your job?

Many people may not think that working as a sales executive within the waste industry could be very exciting, but actually, I have visited some pretty impressive companies.

When quoting a businesses waste management system, whether they think they may only need 1 wheelie bin for mixed waste, or need a whole fleet of waste options, my first job will be to understand what waste is generated and how it’s created. This involves me knowing a bit more about them, and sometimes visiting their premises. Essentially doing a ‘waste audit’.

To name a few, I have visited the Royal Stables at Sandringham, which is impressive in its own right, I took a trip to Kerry Foods and watched the full production line (it was like being in an episode of ‘Inside the factory’.) and I have been to Bristol Maid, a huge manufacturer of hospital furniture, the operation inside this building was impressive!

What’s different about AMS over other waste management companies?

I think it’s hugely important that the companies I am speaking to understand that Avon Material Supplies are a local, family-run business. We are not a huge firm where you will be just another number and you will deal directly with me when discussing your waste management contract.

Transparency is key for me, both in terms of the pricing I give you and the service you will receive. When working with AMS, you will get:

  • A dedicated account manager
  • A personal service
  • No call centres to muddle through when you need to speak to us
  • No trickery in terms of contracts or quoting
  • No pressure to commit, we won’t rush you
  • A rolling contract once you’ve completed your first 12 months – we won’t unknowingly lock you into another contract.

What service are you most excited about at AMS?

The wheelie bin service is the newest that AMS has launched that I deal directly with and it’s been great to see the interest it’s generated in just a small amount of time.

I think many businesses notice they have an issue with their waste management company, but put it on the back burner to rearrange and end up spending far more than they need to or don’t have the correct set-up for their business.

The range of wheelie bins that AMS can offer makes this service extremely flexible, whether it’s a small restaurant business I am chatting to or a large scale care home, each requires a different solution for their waste which we can easily resolve.

What three words best describe you?

I would probably say focused, loyal and private.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy a good ol’ pub quiz, table tennis and collecting national hunt memorabilia.

Tell us a fact about you that not many people know

Whilst it may be a little different to working in the waste industry, I was actually a head chef in the last century!
