At Avon Material Supplies we take an active role in our local community, so when we heard that Fernheath Play (a much-loved centre for young people based in Bournemouth) had suffered severe vandalism, we were happy to be able to help.
Back in August 2019, a group of teenagers broke into Fernheath Play and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the centre, it’s play equipment including the large trampoline and climbing frame, and the fencing surrounding the sensory garden.
After council funding was withdrawn in 2015, the centre relies heavily on donations to be able to keep their doors open to the local youth. Because of this, there is often little spare budget for unforeseen circumstances, such as the recent vandalism.
When Fernheath Children’s Charity contacted us for a low cost skip and shared details of their plight, we were delighted to provide a skip for free. To help the centre further, we contacted our friends at Commercial Recycling who were also happy to support Fernheath by providing free recycling and disposal of the waste they place in their skip.
More on Fernheath Play
Based in West Howe, Bournemouth, Fernheath Play has been providing after school and holiday clubs for local children of all ages since 1975. In order to be able to offer affordable support and activities for children in need, Fernheath Play only ask for a £10 registration fee for a whole year’s worth of access!
The site benefits from a range of outdoor play equipment, indoor activity space and of course a team of caring, supportive staff. Children can either take part in scheduled activities or come and go as they please.
One of the many things that makes Fernheath Play so special is their commitment to inclusivity. Their outdoor adventure playground features a range of wheelchair-friendly equipment, and indoors they have their own sensory room that has been shown to be beneficial for children with learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or sensory impairments. They also run a project for children with disabilities and additional needs alongside their holiday playscheme. All children are welcome at Fernheath Play, and their Interim Manager, Paul, even runs a minibus service to pick up children from school and bring them back to the centre so that no one misses out.
