Day in the Life of … Jade

As the weather heats up and the sun shines down, our tipper and grab trucks are still very busy delivering aggregates and collecting waste from local businesses and homeowners across Dorset. And behind these trucks and their drivers is Jade Harrison, our Transport Coordinator. We sat down and caught up with Jade to find out what a normal day looks like for her and hear her 3 words to describe herself.

Tell us a bit about yourself

So, my other half, Dean, works for our sister company, and he suggested I apply for the administrator role that came up here at Avon Material Supplies (AMS). I got the administrator job just over a year ago and in the last 6 months I have become more involved in the routing of the grabs and tippers as one of the Transport Coordinators.

In my role, I work with the drivers of the AMS grab and tipper trucks planning where they are going each day. I will liaise with sites that we are delivering or collecting from, and I will organise where the materials are coming from, where they need to go to.

My background is in care work and I have some experience in law and they have given me many transferable skills that I can bring into this job. The care and legal backgrounds taught me customer service, and I used to organise the rotas when I worked in care so coordinating is not new to me, although the pace is a lot faster than it was in care.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My day starts at 7 and finishes at 5.30 – yes it is a long day, but I am used to it.

My day will start by taking a look at what is on for that day, and rearranging some routes. It isn’t unusual for plans to change within the day so the morning really is spent rerouting drivers and working around schedule changes that come in from our customers. For example, a customer might say that they won’t be ready for an aggregate delivery at the time they originally asked for, so I reroute the driver elsewhere until the customer is ready for the products.

From about lunch time onwards I can then start scheduling the following day’s orders and working out when and where each driver can go. Once that is done, I complete any admin that needs doing from the day.

What excites you most about working at AMS?

I love that no two days are the same. Yes, the structure of my day is pretty much the same but the obstacles we encounter change daily. Each day I am dealing with different people, which makes it exciting too.

The other thing that excites me is the opportunity to build relationships with our drivers and customers. Coming from a care background, I know how important it is to build a good rapport with those you are working with. A big part of the AMS culture is to get to know our customers and everyone goes out of their way to do just this. And this also encourages everyone to create friendships with everyone in the team, so it is always a great atmosphere in the office.

What makes AMS different?

It really does feel like a family here, and that is different. And that is also exciting because it feels like there are bigger and better things coming for us all at the company.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

I would say organised, hardworking and calm (well I try to be).

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know

Not many people really know that I am a big musical theatre fan. I have just seen the new Cinderella by Andrew Lloyd Webber. And recently I went to see Back to The Future The Musical, which was amazing.

I don’t have a particular favourite, anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber is a winner.
