Day in the Life of … Aaron

It has been a while since we caught up with a member of staff to get to know what they get up to and learn a little bit more about them.

With the arrival of Aaron, our new Hazardous Waste Sales Executive, we thought it was the perfect time to have a cuppa and catch up.

Tell us a little bit about you…

I have worked with hazardous waste since August 2015. I started as a truck driver, collecting hazardous waste. In this role, I worked with other members of the company to build up the service.

Prior to this, I was a 3rd generation member of the Royal Navy (both my Dad and Grandad were Naval Officers) from 2008-2015 as an aircraft handler, having travelled to lots of different places as I grew up, experiencing new areas and cultures always excited me, hence the attraction to the Navy.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing pool and snooker, taking my lad and dog out for walks and relaxing with friends and family in my spare time.

My job here at AMS is to provide customers with a compliant and comprehensive hazardous waste service, be the face of the division and ensure all enquiries are responded to in a timely and professional fashion.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day to me includes checking in with the current customer base to make sure they are happy with the service they received or update them on their waste collection, responding to all enquiries and quoting work, and contacting suppliers to gain the best possible pricing and disposal routes for various waste types.

I also liaise with the team here to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion and that all bookings have been scheduled to be completed. 

Sometimes you will find me attending site visits with customers and completing surveys on their hazardous waste. These allow me to learn more about a customer’s needs and gives me a hands-on view of the waste that they have to dispose of so that we can provide the correct containers for the collection. 

At some point in the day, I will also liaise with the team in the office to make sure that I am aware of any upcoming changes to pricing or keep up-to-date on the legislation surrounding hazardous wastes and the permits we hold. The last thing I want to do is quote a job and then discover that the permit we have doesn’t cover that waste.

What excites you about working at AMS?

AMS is a long-standing business with a loyal customer base.

I have been brought in with a great opportunity to expand their hazardous waste division at Canford Recycling Centre and the new challenges and prospects excite me. I get to use my knowledge within the industry to grow and nurture this opportunity and help the business achieve its growth target within the field.

Have you got any interesting stories from your time working here?

I am a new starter to the business so no stories from AMS as of yet, but I am excited to see what the future stories will be!

However, from my time in the industry, one experience that will always stick with me is working with customers on the Isle of Wight to remove waste they had. I learnt that there are two sets of regulations around the transportation of hazardous waste; one set for the roads (ADR) and one set for the seas (IMDG). As the Isle of Wight is an island, we had to make sure that our solutions met both sets of regulations. It was a time of learning and an experience that I have carried and will continue to carry with me throughout my career.

What makes AMS different?

AMS brings together many different elements; from their business surrounding skip bags, skips, and RoRos to their comprehensive concrete options, the customer can benefit from a whole host of services from one company.

I hope that my knowledge will help to expand the services offered by us, especially in the hazardous waste area, so that this myriad of options available as a one-stop shop really sets us apart from competitors.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Approachable, Practical, and Motivated.

Being approachable is part of the job really, as a salesperson you have to be able to speak to people. I have found that being able to talk to all levels of people within the company enables me to do my job better because I get a full understanding of a customer’s needs and can provide a truly bespoke solution for them. I will only get the best information if people feel that they can talk to me.

Again, practicality is part of the job because I have to think logically about what waste a customer has, and what the most efficient way to deal with it would be while making sure we are following rules and regulations.

And I am motivated because I am enthusiastic to know our customer’s business, what waste they produce and work out how we can work together effectively to get the best results.

Tell us a fact about you that not many people know

I am a trained mobile crane driver and firefighter.
