Day in the Life of … Alex, our Concrete Supervisor

This month, we continue our ‘Day in the Life” series with Alex Waters, our Concrete Plant Supervisor/ Batcher. We chatted with him about what his job involves on a day to day basis, and how he spends his time away from work.

Tell us a little bit about you…

A little bit about me personally, I am a family man; I am happily married and have a lovely 11 year old daughter, who I love spending time with whenever I can.

About me professionally, I have been involved with concrete production for the last 10 years. Before starting as the AMS concrete plant supervisor and batcher I could be seen on sites across Bournemouth and Poole providing ‘mix on site’ concrete using one of the AMS volumetric trucks.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Like most people working in construction, my day starts at around 6.30am (early, I know!). This allows me to run our routine daily test of all the equipment, before the plant opens. Then I go on to loading the first jobs into the system ready to be batched (measured out).

I then check what materials we have used during the previous day, what we have left over, and what we will need for the week ahead. If we need more material, I will get it ordered so we are ready for the rest of the orders.

I make sure that the yard is kept clean, as it can get quite dirty thanks to the range of vehicles coming and going from the plant. I also work with the sales team, routing all the concrete jobs across the concrete trucks we have.

When I’m not doing all of that, I am taking samples of the concrete we have produced, so they can be tested to ensure the quality is consistent.

What’s different about AMS over other concrete companies?

At AMS Concrete, we go out of our way to produce quality products and we always do our best to keep our customers happy.

For me, this is evident in a few ways. Firstly, the investment that goes into the trucks we use to deliver our concrete. They are maintained to a high standard, and frequently replaced so that we aren’t running old trucks. This means that we can run a reliable delivery service, be it through our drum mixers, or volumetric trucks.

And secondly, the investment in the machinery and the team running it all. As I mentioned previously, I run daily tests to make sure that the machinery is working exactly as it should be, and I often take samples to make sure that every batch is high quality. We worked hard to get our BSI accreditation and we work hard to make sure we live up to that.

We take pride in being able to offer an all round and reliable concrete service.

What three words best describe you?

That’s a hard one. Dedicated, as I’m 100% focused on my role. Friendly, I am easy to get on with. And, content, I am in a good, happy place with my work.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Aside from spending time with my family, my main hobbies are food related, I’m a keen BBQ/smoker (American style). I also enjoy running my wood fired pizza oven. Basically, I enjoy cooking anything, more or less, in my outdoor kitchen (also known as my man cave area). My wife will tell you that I also like playing the host and I enjoy entertaining my friends and family.

Tell us a fact about you that not many people know

As much as I love to entertain others, I also love not doing that. Sometimes falling asleep on the sofa is the best!

Let's work together
