If you’re planning to transform your outdoor space, you may require some topsoil, sands or construction aggregates to ensure that the job is done correctly. However, with so many different types of materials available it can be a challenge to know what to buy and how much to order.
In this guide, we explain a bit more about each of our Dorset aggregates and what they are typically used for by DIY enthusiasts and tradespeople.
Topsoil Alternative – 10mm
This is one of our most popular aggregates that we sell, especially at springtime with plenty of garden projects going on.
Why is it called an ‘alternative’? Our topsoil alternative is made from recycled aggregates. The quality isn’t much different to a primary topsoil, but it can be more cost-effective for the buyer and also means you’re using a recycled product… even better!
Popular uses for our topsoil include:
- Lawn restoration
- As a base for a flower bed
- Improving drainage
- Vegetable gardens
- Levelling out uneven surfaces
- Potting plants
Great service. Friendly, helpful delivery guy. Nice quality soil. Prompt delivery. Thank you. – Pam, AMS Customer
Typically used as a base layer for various small and medium home exterior and construction projects, our washed shingle product has gone through an extensive screening and cleaning process.
Popular uses for our shingle include:
- Mixing with concrete sand and cement to make a strong fine-textured concrete
Our shingle comes from a recycled source and therefore we don’t recommend it for decorative uses, however it is a cheaper alternative as a base layer for driveways, pathways and general landscaping.
Type 1 Limestone
Our type 1 limestone is a primary aggregate that meets the Department of Transport’s Specification for Highway Works which means it’s very popular for larger projects and commercial work.
Popular uses for our limestone include:
- Car parks
- Patio areas
- Building bases
Scalpings – 40mm
Thinking of building decking in your garden or even better a hot tub area for all those summer parties you’ll be planning?
Scalpings are a primary limestone aggregate bought from the mendip quarries which we stock at our inert facility in Canford and can be used as a sub-base for construction uses. We only provide our customers with one size option for scalpings as this is the best option for most projects.
Popular uses for our scalpings include:
- Car parks
6F5 Crushed Concrete
This is typically more of a larger commercial product as opposed to something you will use at home for a garden project.
What does 6F5 mean? 6F5 is a grade of aggregate that needs to be passed in order for us to sell. The biggest pieces of hardcore will be no more than 125mm, but will also include finer pieces and even dust.
Popular uses for our crushed concrete include:
- Capping layers
- Trench fills
- Temporary roads
- Oversite fill
All In Ballast (10 & 20mm)
This product is a pre-mix of washed shingle and coarse sand. When mixed with cement it produces a strong everyday-use concrete.
Popular uses for our all in ballast include:
- Building foundations
- Hard standings
- Building bases
Builders Sand (primary)
As the name suggests, many builders around Dorset choose to use this product, but it’s also popular with homeowners too as it can be ordered in smaller quantities or as a bulk purchase.
Popular uses for our builders sand include:
- Making concrete and mortar
- Brick laying
Medium Washed Sand
What’s the difference between medium washed sand and builders sand?
Washed sand is a recycled product that comes off our recycle plant, building sand is not a recycled material, it comes from a quarry and is approved to be used by builders.
Popular uses for our washed sand include:
- Pipe bedding
- Cattle bedding
- Cable laying
- Horse ménages
- General fill
Type 1 Recycled
This is a cheaper alternative to the type 1 limestone product, but can be used in the same way. As this is a recycled product, your type 1 recycled will typically be made of crushed concrete.
Popular uses for our type 1 recycled include:
- Roads (sub-base)
- Patio sub-bases
Good recycled materials, delivered on time – Barry, AMS Customer
Sharp Washed (Grit) Sand
Our sharp sand is a recycled product and is more coarse and has larger particles than other construction sands such as builder’s sand mentioned above, which consists of finer grains.
Popular uses for our sharp washed sand include:
- Concrete (when mixed with other aggregates)
- Laying block paving
- Garden aeration when mixed with compost
You can learn more about the uses of our sharp sand product here.
Whether it’s for a garage or summer house base or maybe you’re planning something more complex, AMS Concrete is the answer for your quick delivery of pre-mixed concrete.
