Dorset business waste management

We may be all about offering a ‘rubbish service’, but we do understand that most businesses don’t find waste management the most exciting of topics. That’s why we work hard to be able to offer Dorset businesses easy, low cost and reliable ways to manage their waste.

If you own a local shop, office, restaurant or any other businesses with physical premises, our new waste collection services could be the ideal solution for you. In this article, we provide handy waste management tips for two example business types, and explain how our new services can benefit most local businesses, regardless of industry.

Office waste

Think paper, card, printer cartridges and more… Offices can produce a lot of waste. If you own or operate a local office, you’ll need to be considering how to reuse, recover or dispose of all of these legally.

What can you do to make it easier?

  • Pop waste paper recycling bins around the office / under desks so that staff members aren’t tempted to chuck paper away with non-recyclables.
  • Dedicate a space for scrap paper that can be reused. We’re all guilty of printing off a doc that has text on one side, where the other side is still perfectly good for notetaking.
  • Some charities can raise money from used printer / toner cartridges. Can you task someone in your team with looking into local charities that may be more than happy to accept your cartridge waste?
  • Get the support of your team! Most employees will be used to recycling at home, so recycling at work should easily become second nature. Just make sure they are aware of the specific recycling and waste bins you have onsite (clear signage can help this), and encourage the team to use them correctly.

What can we do to make it easier?

  • Our commercial wheelie bin service allows you to have different sized bins for the principal types of waste your office produces. For example, we can provide you with a large bin for recyclables and a medium sized bin for general waste.
  • Don’t think you have enough space for wheelie bins? Our commercial refuse sacks are a popular choice for businesses with limited space. We would recommend 1 roll of sacks for general ‘black bag’ waste, and one for recyclables.
  • Most offices only require a weekly waste collection service. However, we are able to offer daily and fortnightly services if required.

Restaurant / cafe / bar waste

Every year, a whopping 2.9 million tonnes of food is thrown away by the food industry! This isn’t entirely surprising due to the fast paced, high service volume environments that these businesses operate in. Using separate food waste bins is by far the best and most cost effective solution. Simply put, food waste is generally heavier so would cost more to dispose of with general mixed waste.

Although you are probably already utilising separate food waste bins, there are some steps you can take if you want to improve your waste management further…

What can you do to make it easier?

  • Make things as convenient as possible for your team. Have food waste bins under each food preparation station, and have multiple glass waste bins under your bar.
  • Clearly define your end of shift waste management process. Which bins get emptied where?
  • If you have leftover quality food at the end of a shift that can’t be saved for the next day, consider donating to food banks. Alternatively, there are apps such as ‘TooGoodToGo’ that allow customers to buy your leftovers at a reduced cost!

What can we do to make it easier?

  • Our commercial wheelie bin service was MADE for food industry businesses. We would recommend:
    • 1 x Large food waste bin
    • 1 x Large mixed recycling bin
    • 1 x Medium glass recycling bin
    • 1 x Medium general waste bin
  • Where waste production is high volume on a daily basis, we can be accommodating and empty your bins daily if required.
