Guide To Sub Base Aggregates | Avon Material Supplies

Guide to sub base aggregates

At Avon Material Supplies, we supply various aggregates that are suitable for use in sub bases. Our construction aggregates are trusted by leading contractors and have been used extensively in a number of high profile jobs including roadway improvements for the 2012 Olympics.

What is a sub base?

A sub base is an aggregate or aggregate mix that forms a sound, load-bearing base layer for applications such as the construction of roads, paths and pavements. A sub base aggregate can also be used as a base for patios and artificial grass.

We stock large quantities of the following aggregates that are suitable for use as a sub base.

Using our own modern fleet of grab and tipper trucks, we can deliver up to 20 tonnes of loose material in a single trip. Or if preferred, our sub-base materials can be supplied in large bulk bags, which hold up to 1 tonne. If you are a contractor, tradesman or member of the public, you can order via our online shop or by calling 01202 579579.

Our sub base aggregates & their uses

Scalpings

Suitable for: pathways, driveways and other landscaping projects

Our 40mm Scalpings are a limestone product, similar to MOT type 1, but due to the higher clay content, it does not meet the MOT highways specification. Scalpings are ideal for pathways and driveways, compounds, hardstanding, general fill to prevent dipping and cracks, and fill potholes.

Type 1 recycled

Suitable for: hardstandings, building sub-bases, road/path/patio/driveway sub-bases

Type 1 recycled is recycled hardcore crushed at 40mm down to dust, containing concrete to create an easily compacted recycled aggregate. An excellent alternative to the more expensive Type 1 limestone product, it is often used in road and path construction.

Type 1 limestone

Suitable for: a sub-base for car parks, footpaths, driveways, hardstandings, roads, highways, patio areas and building bases.

Type 1 limestone is a sub-base aggregate made from crushed limestone. It meets the grading of a Type 1 and can be used in construction of all roads and highways and is an MOT type 1 (clause 803 high specification) approved grade aggregate.

All in ballast (when mixed with cement)

Suitable for: foundations, hard standing and building bases

Our all in ballast is a pre-mix of washed aggregate and coarse sand. When mixed with cement it produces a strong coarse grade concrete which is suitable for foundations, hard standings and building bases. Available in 10 & 20mm grade.

How to calculate the amount of sub base material needed

The thickness (depth) of your sub base is dependent on the usage of that area. We recommend the following as a general rule:

  • Patios, garden paths: 75-100mm
  • Driveways, public footpaths: 100-150mm
  • Heavy uses: 150-225mm
  • Highways: 150mm +

Follow our sub base calculator below to help you work out exactly how much material you’re likely to need.

Steps:

  1. Measure the length and width in metres of the area you wish to fill with a sub base aggregate e.g. 20m x 10m
  2. Multiply the length and width to find the area in square metres.
  3. Multiply by the depth e.g. 150mm
  4. Multiply by 2 to get the tonnage required

Example:

Length 20m x width 10m = 200 sqm
200 (length x width) x 0.150 (depth) x 2 = 60 tonnes
