How to rent a skip – helpful advice from AMS, your local skip company

There are times when ferrying rubbish back and forth to the dump can become tiresome, and hiring a skip could be an easier, more efficient, low-cost option. Especially if you are carrying out larger DIY projects, home renovations or full scale sort outs in the garden or garage.

The great thing about renting a skip is that, other than filling it, most of the hard work is done for you! Read on to learn how to rent a skip, as well as useful tips from AMS (Avon Material Supplies), the skip hire specialists in Bournemouth and Poole.

Why would you need to rent a skip?

There are many different reasons as to why you may find yourself in need of a skip. Whatever you need to discard of, AMS is likely to be able to provide you with a suitable skip hire solution.

Our skips can be used for disposing of the following waste types:

How can I save money when it comes to hiring a skip?

One of the best ways to reduce the cost of skip hire is to only place a single waste type in the skip. This avoids you paying a higher price as mixed waste skips are more expensive to dispose of due to the additional sorting that is required at the disposal facility.

Tip – if the majority of the waste you need need to get rid of is one type with just a small amount of something else, such as wood, why not use a skip bag?

Avoid placing restricted items in your skip.

You will have been given a skip hire price based partly on the type of waste you’re disposing of, so if you don’t want to face additional fees, avoid putting restricted items into your skip. Even if you’re tempted to hide them amongst other things, it’s not worth the risk. In many cases, the hiring company and/or waste disposal site will go through your skip to check there are no items in it that shouldn’t be there.

Commonly restricted items include liquids, hazardous items, electrical equipment, computer towers, monitors, television screens, paint cans, mattresses, tyres, batteries, fridges and freezers.

If you’re unsure whether the waste you need to dispose of is permitted in a skip, please phone our expert team on 01202 579579.

Choose the best skip size for the job.

Another great way to keep down the cost of renting a skip is to hire the correct sized skip. It’s common sense, but most normal sized skips are now being charged at an ‘all in rate’. This means that if your skip is left half-empty, you are effectively paying to have fresh air to be disposed of! In contrast, ordering a skip that is too small can be a costly mistake because you will likely need to hire an additional skip to deal with the surplus waste that didn’t fit in the first skip.

There are several skip sizes to consider:

Small skip

4-yard skip is the ideal choice for small domestic or maintenance jobs or for use in sites with limited space. They are the smallest skip we offer and can hold around 30 – 40 bin bags of waste.

Medium skip

The most commonly requested skip size we offer is a 6-yard skip. These are sometimes referred to as ‘builder’s skips’ and can hold around 60 black bin bags of waste which makes it the perfect option for most DIY projects or household clearances.

Large skip

8-yard skips will hold an average of 80 rubbish bags and are very popular with our trade clients. This size of skip is often the preferred choice among builders as it can be effective in the disposal of construction waste and heavy materials that are often creating during mid-size home or garden renovations.

Largest skip size

12-yard skip holds a lot more than the other three options, with on average between 125 and 135 average-sized rubbish bags fitting in. These large skips are most commonly used for commercial projects as they are a perfect choice for disposing of various types of bulky commercial and construction wastes.
