What can I put in a skip?

Before hiring a skip through Avon Material Supplies you should consider what waste you need to be removed… is it all one type? Is it recyclable? Can it be segregated into separate skips or containers to save money?

What are common waste types accepted in AMS skips?

The skips we provide are suitable for use in the disposal of most residential and commercial waste types. Skips we hire out on a daily basis are often filled with one, or a combination of the following wastes:

For more information, view our brochure here.

What can’t go in AMS skips?

Most waste streams are allowed in our mixed waste skips. However, some are required by law to be segregated and treated in a special manner, these include;

  • Plasterboard
  • Hazardous waste (batteries, WEEE, fluorescent bulbs, chemicals, paint etc. See the full list here)
  • Asbestos
  • Liquid waste
  • Electrical items / WEEE waste

If you require a waste collection service for any of the above, please give us a call on 01202 810938 or email enquiries@avonmaterialsupplies.co.uk and we can provide alternative solutions.

Save the environment (and your bank balance) by segregating…

We can offer reduced rates of skip hire if you know you are only throwing out one type of waste stream, or if you are happy to hire multiple containers so waste can be separated into different ‘dedicated’ containers on-site. By segregating your waste, if it can be recycled, it is far more likely to be recovered and diverted from landfill.

Did you know that the UK is targeted to recycle at least 50% of household waste by 2020?* Stats from 2016 show we recycle just over 45%, but you can help do your part by simply segregating your waste properly when hiring a skip from Avon Material Supplies.  See the governement website here

Where does my waste go?

Once you’ve finished with your skip, our team will collect it on a day that suits you and we will take it to our recycling site near Wimborne in Dorset (please note certain hazardous wastes may be taken directly to a specialist facility). As well as mixed waste, they accept hazardous waste, so you can rest assured your waste will be segregated and recycled where possible. You can find out more about the recycling facility here.

Canford Recycling Centre regularly achieves recycling rates of over 80%.

Order your skip today

If you are ready to order a skip, the team at AMS are on hand to assist you with any enquiries you have. There are various different sizes of skip available, which will suit most requirements, and if you need something a little bigger we’ve also got the solution.

Give us a call on 01202 810938 or email us at enquiries@avonmaterialsupplies.co.uk.

Things to keep in mind when filling and hiring a skip

Hiring a skip as part or all of your waste management solution is a convenient and affordable way to remove your unwanted waste. Whether it’s to finish a garden project that’s been going on a little too long, removing waste from a recent renovation project or your moving offices, it’s important to keep in mind a few pointers for when you are hiring and filling your skip.

Are you a size 6, 8 or 12?

We’re not talking about your clothes size, when hiring a skip, we offer 3 different sized skips, a 6 yard (sometimes refer to as a builders skip), 8 yard and 12 yard. It is important to think carefully about the size of skip you require because you don’t want to be left in a situation where you can’t fit all your waste into the skip you have ordered. Or equally as bad, you hire a larger sized skip when a smaller one would be perfect for the amount of waste you have to dispose of. If you are unsure and would like guidance, please contact our team who will be happy to provide you with advice on skip sizes to help you choose the right skip to hire.

Keep us in the loop

Some customers find they hire a skip with us and within a day it’s already filled and we are picking it up again the next day. We understand that this isn’t the case for everyone, and we won’t charge more, regardless if you need to keep it for 2 days or for up to 2 weeks. All we ask is that you keep us in the loop, so once you know when it will be filled, we can schedule our team to pick it up ASAP.

We also appreciate understanding beforehand what your delivery situation will be like. Key information that can make delivering your skip easier could include; what is the access like, where would you like the skip situated, should someone be contacted shortly before the skip is delivered etc. This sort of information helps us to plan in advance to make the whole process of hiring a skip as seamless as possible.

Segregating is saving!

Did you know you can save some money by hiring the correct skip? If you’re only getting rid of one type of waste, let us know, and your quote will likely be cheaper. The reason for this is that it makes it easier when it comes to processing and if possible recycling the waste. For example, If you know the majority of your waste is going to be rubble or brick waste, then it is cheaper to hire an inert waste skip, plus an Easy ‘Skip’ Bag for those extra (non-inert) bits than paying for a mixed waste skip.

Understand exactly what you can put in your skip

It can be a costly mistake if additional charges are applied to your skip hire because the skip is found to contain items that are not permitted within the skip type you have hired. To avoid any unwanted expense, please contact our team who will be pleased to provide a full list of common waste types that can and can’t be placed in a skip. For example, mixed waste skips cannot be used to dispose of electrical items, liquid waste or hazardous materials, such as; aerosols, gas bottles, pesticides or TVs. Also, Plasterboard waste is also not permitted in mixed waste skips because by law it must be disposed of separately.

How to dispose of home renovation waste

How to dispose of home renovation waste

Improving your home over the summer? Getting rid of all your home renovation waste can be a daunting prospect. Whether you are pulling down a wall or two to achieve an open plan living space, upgrading your bathrooms or just ripping up those carpets that have down for far too long! You will be creating a volume of waste that won’t be suitable for disposal at your local tip.

Here at Avon Material Supplies, we work hard to make removing home renovation waste as simple as it can be. Our waste collection services are low cost and can often be completed on a same or next day basis in Poole, Bournemouth and throughout the BH postcode area.

Here are some questions we are asked frequently asked regarding the disposal of renovation waste:

How should I organise my renovation waste?

Most wastes are accepted in our mixed waste containers, however this does come with some exceptions, including:

  • No electrical items (e.g. TV’s, fridges and kitchen appliances)
  • No hazardous materials (e.g. aerosols and gas bottles)
  • No plasterboard waste
  • No liquid waste

By law, these materials must be segregated from mixed waste streams and disposed of in accordance to the particular laws that govern the particular waste type. If you do plan to dispose of any of these materials, please get in touch with our team on 01202 810938. to discuss your options.

What size container would you recommend for renovation waste disposal?

This completely depends on the size of your project and the volume of waste it will create. If you are planning to just renovate a small area of your house, such as one room, you may only need to order one or two Easy Skip Bags. These can carry up to 1 tonne of waste, so are perfect for smaller projects.

If you are planning a larger size renovation then hiring a 6 or 12 yard skip would be ideal. These can hold the equivalent of around 60 or 120 black bin bags. We can deliver, exchange and collect skips in all BH postcodes, and our skip hire service can include obtaining the necessary on-road permit, signage, cones and lamps if and when required.

I am also landscaping my garden, can garden waste be disposed of in the same bag or skip?

Yes! As long as it’s not hazardous, garden waste can be mixed with domestic or renovation waste.

If you require more information about renovation waste disposal, please call our expert team on 01202 810938, they will be more than happy to help. Alternatively, contact us for a quote on enquiries@avonmaterialsupplies.co.uk.

Size Matters!

Whether you’re sorting out your garden, renovating your home or your large business is moving offices, we have a licensed waste disposal solution to suit you.

Important things to consider when dealing with waste

Understanding your waste disposal needs is essential and an important step to help ensure you save money where possible and act in a compliant manner. Common questions our expert team can help you to answer include:

  • How much waste do I have to dispose of?
  • Is any of my waste hazardous?
  • Can I put all my types of waste in a single container?
  • Would I save money by segregating my waste?

For free advice, call our waste collection team on 01202 810938

Once you have a better understanding of the waste you need to dispose of, the next decision you will face is what container is most suitable for your needs.

I’ve used these guys a few times now for various types of waste. Always been fast, efficient and priced very keenly. I have given their contact to plenty of builders and home renovators in the course of my job and have yet to hear of a disgruntled customer.

The reaches of grab lorries

Builders sand Poole

As you may be aware, we have an extensive fleet of vehicles that serve a wide range of purposes. From clearing waste at construction sites to delivering bulk bags of aggregates, we have the right vehicle for the task. Our modern fleet contains tipper trucks and grab lorries of various sizes.

The reach of our grab lorries

Our grab lorries are available in a range of sizes: 4 wheeler, 6 wheeler or 8 wheeler. The more wheels on the lorry, the greater its carrying capacity.

The extendable grab arm on each of our lorries can reach a substantial distance, see below for approximate guide measurements.

  • 4 wheeler – approxomately 7 metres
  • 6 wheeler – approximately 5 metres reach when alongside material or waste
  • 8 wheeler – approximately 12 metres reach

Not sure what grab is best for you, contact our experts on 01202 579579

Putting that in perspective – the 12 metre reach of the 8 wheeler’s extendable arm is equivalent to the following: the length of some double-decker buses, over 4x the height of a football goal and half the height of Buckingham Palace!

Position your waste appropriately

If you are using a grab lorry for waste clearance purposes, you must make sure that the waste for disposal is positioned appropriately. It must be located where there is sufficient space for the lorry to work and away from overhead cables that could obstruct the grab arm. The bigger the lorry that you require, the more space required for work to be completed.

Projects that benefit from grab lorries

The ‘grabbing’ capability of our lorries means that they are perfect for site clearance projects. We accept waste streams including construction waste, commercial waste, green waste, inert waste and concrete. This versatility means that almost whatever you are clearing, we can collect it for you!

If you have hazardous waste that requires disposal, we can help in association with Commercial Recycling.

Please note: Our grab lorries cannot be used for digging up waste, only clearing.

Whatever your site clearance project, a grab lorry will undoubtedly help the process. If you need a grab lorry to progress with your project, contact our friendly team on 01202 579579 today.

What is muck away?

Inert waste muck away

Muck away, also known as cartaway, is an inert waste removal method chosen by individuals, tradespeople and businesses. If you are undertaking a site clearance project that creates a large amount of inert waste, you should look into arranging muck away.

This post will outline what happens during a typical Avon Material Supplies muck away service and where the waste goes once we remove it from your site.

How we do muckaway

The muck away service we provide is carried out on our own modern fleet of tipper trucks and grab lorries. We offer a range of different sized vehicles to allow our customers to choose the ideal muckaway solution for their project.

Grab lorry or tipper truck?

If you have a large amount of waste to be cleared, a tipper truck may be the best option as they have greater carrying capacity. However, you can only benefit from a tipper truck if you have the appropriate means to load it at your site, if not, a grab lorry will be required. Grab lorries are a great option because they can simply enter your site and collect the waste using an extendable grab arm.

After contacting us and establishing what capacity truck or lorry you require, one of our drivers will visit your site to collect the waste at a predetermined time / date.

Our fleet

The vehicles that complete muck away include:

Where does collected muck go?

We are a fully licensed waste carrier which means we are legally allowed to transport waste. Once the fully loaded tipper truck or grab lorry leaves your site, our experienced drivers will take your cleared waste to one of our trusted inert tipping sites.

Popular inert tipping facilities we use include:

If you would like any further information about our muck away service or if you wish to arrange a site clearance, please contact our friendly team on 01202 579579.

What is a grab lorry and how do I hire one?

What is grab lorry hire

Popular forms of waste collection, including grab lorry hire.

When it comes to a site clearance project, there are a number of methods that you can choose from to assist with your waste disposal. This article will explain what grab lorry hire is and the differences between the various other popular forms of waste collection.

Depending on the amount of waste you are clearing, any of the following will be suitable for your project.

What is grab lorry hire?

Whilst most people only conceive grab lorries to be used for large clearance tasks, they are in fact very versatile, especially when AMS offer 4, 6 & 8 wheeler grab lorries for hire.

A primary benefit of using grab lorry hire is that it is a quick and straightforward process. The lorry visits your site, collects the waste using an extendable arm, places it on the back of the lorry and then leaves to safely transport the waste to a suitable disposal facility.

The grab arms allow waste to be collected from the road and over obstacles, meaning if there is limited access at your site a grab lorry will still be able clear your waste (*if it’s located correctly)!

In addition to being able to collect loose waste, grab lorries can also easily collect filled skip bags. Therefore, sites with various waste streams can separate and dispose of their waste using multiple skip bags. To learn more about skips bags in Bournemouth please visit: easy-bag.co.uk

Carrying capacity of our grab lorries:

  • 4 wheel grab – up to 8 tonnes
  • 6 wheel grab – up to 12 tonnes
  • 8 wheel grab – up to 16 tonnes

To learn more about hiring a grab lorry in Dorset, please visit our grab lorry webpage or contact our friendly team.

*Please note, the waste material required to be ‘grabbed’ away should be placed within the reach area of the grab arm, located where there is adequate space for the vehicle to work and away from any overhead cables. For further guidance, please contact our team.

“Grab lorries can deliver aggregates and clear your waste in one journey!”

Tipper truck hire

Tipper lorry hire Avon Material Supplies

Using a tipper truck is less flexible than a grab lorry due to not having a grab arm. If you choose a tipper truck, you must have the appropriate machinery on-site to load waste onto the truck.

For large site clearance projects on more extensive sites, tipper trucks are often the number one choice as they offer a fast turnaround and are able to carry more waste than the comparable size of grab lorry.

Our tipper trucks are either 6 or 8 wheelers, being able to transport 15 tonnes and 19.5 tonnes of material respectively.

It’s good to know… Our large tipper fleet is available to hire on a ‘by request’ basis or as part of a scheduled waste management / haulage service. AMS’s tippers operate extensively throughout Dorset and West Hampshire and can be hired by individuals, businesses and contractors.

For further information on tipper truck hire please contact our team or visit our tipper truck hire webpage.

Skip hire

skip hire Avon Material supplies

Traditionally, skips are the first thought when people are considering a clearance project. If your skip is going to be positioned on a road or footpath, you must ensure that you have the necessary council permit and safety equipment in place e.g. lights and cones.

Skips range from 2-12 yards in size, making them a flexible waste management solution that people often choose for modest sized waste clearance projects e.g. house clearances, kitchen fit outs etc.

For more information on skip hire, please contact our experts or visit our Bournemouth skip hire webpage.

If you require assistance establishing the best sort of site clearance for your requirements, contact the waste management experts at Avon Material Supplies.
