What to look for when choosing concrete in Bournemouth

AMS delivering concrete in Bournemouth

Choosing the best concrete in Bournemouth

When it comes to DIY concrete jobs, there isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. So, whether you’re building a shed base, setting a few fence posts, or laying a new patio, it’s a good idea to keep the following things in mind to ensure you choose the best concrete Bournemouth has to offer.

Tight for time? Call our concrete experts on 01202 579579 opt.3 for advice.

Volumetric vs ready mixed

At Avon Material Supplies (AMS), we operate our own volumetric concrete mixer trucks, as well as organising ready-mix concrete in Bournemouth, and there are pros and cons for both of these options.

Traditionally, tradespeople and contractors have often opted to use ready-mixed concrete that is batched at a plant and then delivered to site using a mixer truck.  This approach is still popular, however, it is worth noting if you order the wrong amount of concrete you are likely to incur additional charges and possibly the inconvenience of not being able to complete the job.

At AMS Concrete, we are seeing more and more tradespeople, contractors and individuals choose our volumetric service because concrete is mixed to order ‘live’ on site, which means it is at its freshest and the mix can be adjusted in real-time, if required.

The right option for you really depends on the job at hand and your personal preferences. Find out more about volumetric concrete mixers vs. ready mix concrete by reading our recent article here. Alternatively, get in touch and one of our advisors will be happy to help.

Quality of concrete

When investing in concrete for a project, large or small, you want to make sure you’re getting the highest quality product for your money. Whether you’re a professional builder in the local area or you’re working on a DIY project at home, the last thing you want is to be forking out for is costly repairs later down the line because you invested in an inferior product.

To get the best concrete in Bournemouth, be sure to look out for quality products, a choice of mixes and the support of an experienced team. Here at AMS, we are a leading aggregate and building materials supplier in the Bournemouth, Poole and wider Dorset area, and have been for over 25 years. Our concrete mixes are independently ‘strength tested’ to suit almost any application.

Different concrete mixes for the job

From industrial foundations and roadworks, to a brand new patio for the garden, you’ll need to consider which mix is most suitable for your project.

For domestic non-reinforced foundations, look out for the C10/Gen1 mix. If you’re after some new paving for external steps or paths, you might consider PAV1. Whereas if you are creating reinforced foundations for houses and garages we would normally recommend an RC35 mix.

By using volumetric trucks, AMS concrete can mix on-site and dispatch a complete range of different mixes. If you’re not sure what the ideal concrete mix will be for your project, that’s not a problem. Let us know and our team of experts will be happy to advise you.

At AMS Concrete we’re dedicated to providing you with the best concrete and service for your needs.

Now you’ve chosen the right concrete for your job, you’ll need to find the best place in Bournemouth to buy it. At AMS, we are leading suppliers of ready mix concrete and volumetric concrete mixer trucks to businesses, construction sites and domestic users in Poole, Bournemouth and the BH postcode area.

For detailed advice tailored to your specific concrete needs, or to place an order, please contact our expert team online or call us on 01202 579579 opt.3. Our team are on hand all day Monday – Friday to answer any of your concrete questions.

Volumetric vs Barrel Mixed Concrete – Which is best for your construction project?

Volumetric mix onsite concrete lorry

Avon Material Supplies now offer volumetric concrete mixer trucks, for onsite concrete orders, to complement the ready mixed concrete services currently offered through AMS Nationwide.

“Volumetric mixers have revolutionised the construction industry and we are pleased to add modern volumetric ‘mix onsite’ concrete delivery trucks to our fleet.” Richard Clarke, Commercial Manager

Our volumetric trucks enable concrete to be mixed ‘live’ at the site, which has advantages for many construction projects, compared with the traditional barrel delivery method. With concrete orders dispatched using barrel trucks, batches are ready mixed at the plant and then delivered to site ready to use, which is OK assuming the volume ordered is spot on and won’t result is under ordering, wastage or part load charges.

With the recent launch of our volumetric mixer service, we thought that it would be helpful to take a look at the important advantages of both mixing methods for different jobs. In this article, we highlight the benefits of each system, to help you better understand whether ready mix or volumetric mixed concrete is best for your needs.

Benefits of ready mix (barrel mixed) concrete

There are some benefits to working with ready mix concrete, depending on the needs of the particular job:

  • Speed – ready mix concrete delivered in barrel trucks is a good choice when time is super critical, as the material can be dispatched instantly upon arrival.
  • Consistent quality – as ready mix concrete is prepared in advance at the plant, rather than onsite as is the case with volumetric, there is less scope for an inconsistent mix to be produced. However, a properly trained operative (as supplied by AMS) will ensure that volumetric mixing is also conducted to the highest standards at-site, to produce a consistently high-quality concrete mix.

Considerations of ready mix concrete

There are some important considerations to bear in mind when working with ready mix concrete, including:

  • Time-limited – depending on the mix, you may only have a couple of hours to use the concrete from the time the batch is mixed at the plant.
  • Cost to return – if unused concrete needs to be returned for disposal this will almost always incur additional costs to the user.
  • Only one mix per batch – you only receive the same mix as was loaded.
  • Requires an accurate estimation to order – as the concrete is mixed in advance, precise ordering is required to ensure you only receive the right amount of concrete for the job.
  • Cannot change the mix design onsite – once batched, the concrete must be dispatched in a ‘as is’ state, which means on-the-spot changes, such as adding additives, is not possible.

Benefits of volumetric mix concrete

Volumetric mixing has revolutionised the industry and offers a number of economic and practical benefits for commercial and domestic projects, these include:

  • Onsite concrete mixing – offers the user the ability to adapt the mix and also ensures the volume of dispatched concrete is correct for its intended application.
  • No waste – only the concrete that’s needed is mixed, eliminating the potential for waste materials.
  • Larger mixing capacity – volumetric mixers can typically store double the volume of concrete compared with drum mixers.
  • No time limit – with ready mix, there is a time frame within which the concrete needs to be used between mixing at the plant and arriving onsite. Volumetric mixers have no such limitations.
  • Ideal for larger projects – onsite mixing means that the volume mixed can easily be scaled up or down, depending on requirements. Volumetric mixers hold up to twice the volume than traditional drum mixers, which is ideal for large-scale projects.
  • Low minimum orders – AMS Concrete can dispatch as little as 0.4m3 on each visit, which makes it a great solution for smaller jobs because only the amount of concrete required for the job is mixed, avoiding any part load or return charges

Considerations of volumetric mixers

Volumetric mixing also has some important factors to consider, including:

  • Requires space onsite for the truck – concrete mixing trucks are fairly large plant vehicles, which obviously need some room onsite to park up and conduct the mixing.

Overall, volumetric mixers have many benefits and advantages over barrel mixing for most typical commercial and domestic applications.

Why can I not put plasterboard in mixed waste skips? Safe plasterboard disposal in Dorset with plasterboard skips

Changing regulations around plasterboard disposal can be confusing. However, whether you are an individual, a tradesperson or are involved in a large construction project, there are clear legal requirements in the UK today that need to be followed to dispose of gypsum-based plasterboard correctly.

In this article, we explain why plasterboard can’t be disposed of in mixed waste skips. We also highlight your options for easy, affordable and safe plasterboard disposal in Dorset, for individuals, businesses and construction contractors.

Why you can’t put plasterboard in mixed waste skips

Plasterboard is typically formed by a layer of gypsum, sandwiched between outer layers of lining paper. It is the gypsum in plasterboard, which is potentially hazardous, that has prompted the Environment Agency to tighten regulations around plasterboard disposal.

Disposing of gypsum alongside biodegradable wastes that can often be found in mixed waste skips may lead to the production of odorous and toxic hydrogen sulphide gas. Separating plasterboard waste into a dedicated plasterboard skip prevents any risks of gypsum materials coming into contact with biodegradable waste.

Safely disposing of plasterboard in plasterboard skips

Legally, any waste containing gypsum materials, such as plasterboard or concrete, should be separated for recovery and recycling wherever possible. Plasterboard skips and plasterboard skip bags provide easy and quick solutions to keep plasterboard separate, ensuring that legal obligations are met and that waste plasterboard is disposed of safely.

Although it is not classed as a hazardous waste, if gypsum is not disposed of correctly it can cause problems for the environment and wildlife.

Safe plasterboard disposal for individuals

Until 2009, the Environment Agency did not specify that separate disposal was a legal requirement for loads where construction waste contained small amounts of sulphate (up to 10%). However, current regulations require that even small amounts of plasterboard should not go to landfill with biodegradable waste. Therefore, to keep the process as simple as possible it’s recommended that plasterboard waste is separated onsite immediately.

AMS Environmental in Dorset offer ‘same day’ plasterboard skips in Bournemouth, Poole and BH postcode areas for individuals, businesses and contractors. For our best plasterboard skip hire prices please call the AMS team on 01202 579579.

Plasterboard skip bags by Easy Bag also offer a quick, easy and affordable way to dispose of your waste plasterboard in Bournemouth, Poole and surrounding areas. Visit or call Easy Bag on 01202 810935 for more information about skip bags in Dorset.

Plasterboard disposal for businesses

Businesses that fail to dispose of plasterboard properly can be fined by the Environment Agency. Canford Recycling Centre, near Wimborne in Dorset, is a trade waste recycling centre that is licensed to accept a wide range of waste types, including plasterboard and many other hazardous and difficult to dispose of wastes.

Large scale plasterboard disposal

Large scale construction projects are subject to even tighter controls with regards to the waste produced onsite. If your construction project is large enough to require a Site Waste Management Plan, plasterboard disposal will be an important factor that will need to be covered in the plan if plasterboard waste is generated.

Businesses and individuals have a legal ‘duty of care’ to ensure that waste is only passed to an authorised carrier, like Canford Recycling Centre in Dorset.

For further advice on tipping plasterboard waste, please call the waste disposal experts at Canford Recycling Centre on 01202 331560 or email for advice about the waste disposal requirements for your construction project in Dorset.

From John O’Groats to Lands End in the ‘Mighty Micra’

From John O’Groats to Lands End in the ‘Mighty Micra’

Paul Harper, Transport Manager for Avon Material Supplies has recently completed a charity driving challenge from John O’Groats in Scotland to Lands End in Cornwall.

The challenge was different because of the amount of petrol and time Paul was allowed to use to complete his journey. Here’s a rundown of how his trip went.

Beginning his journey from John O’Groats on Saturday 1st September at 05:30 am, Paul drove the first 280 miles to get him to Edinburgh. A well-deserved quick pit stop for coffee and fuel was waiting for him, but keen to skip the traffic he decided to avoid the motorways for the next part of his journey.

Another full tank of petrol got Paul to Retford in Nottingham, at this point he had travelled over 520 miles in his Micra, but day 1 didn’t stop there. With another refuel and cup of coffee, he was ready to endure some more miles.

With light traffic, great weather and the Micra performing well, Paul decided to push on past Leicester, the original planned overnight stop and drive on to Cirencester. Day 1 finished at 8 pm with a total of 661 miles driven.

An early 5.00 am start on Sunday, meant Paul was on track to finish his challenge in good time. With the third fuel stop of the trip complete, Paul headed for Plymouth, which would be his next rest point. Knowing this would then leave only 75 miles to cover, Paul could continue safe in the knowledge, the finish was in sight.

Finishing the challenge after 20.5 hours of driving, Paul arrived at 11 am at Lands End after using 87 litres of petrol and travelling 952 miles with no need to add extra oil or water.

As fun as the challenge was, Paul was raising money for the Cancer Research UK.  So far he has raised a total of £1110 and with a target of £1500, he’s very close to his goal.

See the gallery below for some pictures from his challenge >>

Top tips for choosing local skip hire

Top tips for choosing local skip hire

When looking for local skip hire in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset you will want to be sure you are receiving a competitive price from a reputable provider who offers a reliable service and great customer care, so the process from ordering to the pickup of the skip is hassle-free.

With this in mind, below we have outlined our top tips to use when starting your search for a local skip hire company.

Order when you’re ready to start filling

It’s all well and good getting organised, but realistically, you want your skip to be ready when you are, this way it won’t be sitting there for longer than necessary, possibly racking up extra rental charges that are easily avoidable.

If your home is on a busy street or your skip will be kept on your businesses forecourt, you will also want to ensure that passersby don’t use your skip as their own tip… another reason to fill it up and get the skip removed as soon as you can!

It’s good to know that at Avon Material Supplies (AMS), we can deliver, exchange and collect our skips the next day in most cases, so you don’t have to worry about it hanging around.

Did you know? Our local skip hire prices include a 2 week hire period, so you won’t receive an unexpected bill for keeping your skip on the driveway for up to 14 days!

Do your research

When looking for local skip hire you may be overwhelmed by how many companies there are to choose from. Some local skip hire companies will entice you in with cheap prices, but catch you out on their terms and conditions, meaning you will probably end up paying more in the long run.

At AMS, our ‘all in’ pricing is completely transparent and when booking we will be sure to inform you of any extra charges that may incur, such as hire of lights & cones, road permits and rental charges for extra weeks.

When researching your shortlisted skip hire companies, consider the following:

  • Cost – are they going to catch you out?
  • Legal requirements – do they have the correct licences, permits and insurances to be able to carry out the service you require. Please remember its the waste producers responsibility to ensure their waste is collected and disposed of legally!
  • Convenience – how quickly can they drop off, exchange and pick up the skip?
  • Reviews – have they got a Google Business page or Facebook page to back up what they are saying?

“I cannot say how pleased I am with the service I received enough. The initial query was answered extremely quickly and a quick delivery slot was arranged. The delivery driver was fantastic. It was delivered quickly and neatly in the exact place I asked (not easy to get to!). All in all an absolutely fantastic service all round.” – Sarah, customer of AMS

Save money by speaking to the professionals

When choosing your skip, you may be unsure about the size that you will require. Getting this right first time means you can save a lot of money by avoiding paying for unused space in a skip that is too large or having to book a second skip after you’ve started filling the first.

Our professional team have been helping people pick the right skip size for many years, and although we can only provide suggestions based on the information provided, we should be able to give you a fairly accurate recommendation.

When asking for guidance on skip sizes it’s helpful if you can provide clarification on the type of waste(s) you have to remove and the approximate amount of square metre space you have to remove the waste from. Common waste types placed in our skips include; mixed household, garden, rubble, construction, wood and plasterboard

You can also get a lot of information from our skip brochures, including dimensions, which can be found here >>

Segregate your waste

To get the best value for money, if possible, you should segregate your waste where you can because single waste streams are cheaper to dispose of. For example, when ordering you can specifically choose a garden waste skip for the disposal of green waste because it will be considerably cheaper the same sized mixed waste skip. If you know you have multiple waste streams to dispose of, you could also purchase a skip bag for just £6, which can be filled with the waste stream or mixed waste type you have the least of. This solution will mean the skip can just be filled with the (single) waste type you have the most of.

Discussing your waste type with your chosen local skip hire company will ensure that you get the best and often the cheapest solution for your job.

Tell your chosen skip hire company as much as you can

To ensure that the process of hiring a skip in Bouremouth, Poole and Dorset is seamless, it’s important to inform your chosen skip hire company of as many important details as you can, things to tell them should include;

  • What the access is like to your property or business
  • Where you would like the skip located on your property
  • If you require any permits and/or lights & cones
  • Your preferred times for delivery
  • A mobile number in case the driver needs to call you

With these tips in mind, order your local skip hire with AMS

Best bagged aggregates for your garden renovation project?

Bagged aggregates for your garden

Completing any home or garden improvements can be stressful, time-consuming and sometimes expensive. However, the sense of pride and that ‘YOU DID IT’ moment can make it all worthwhile.

Having a well-planned idea, the correct tools, materials and bagged aggregates will help the project to run smoothly.

If restoring the garden is part of your renovation plans, there are many elements to think about. For example, do you have the creativity to landscape the space yourself or will you be consulting a professional? How big is the area you have to work with? Do you require a range of different materials to achieve your desired look? And finally, what’s the budget you are working to?

All of these are important questions to answer before starting the project. In this article, we highlight some of the aggregates delivered in bags that may be of use if you are changing part of your garden or the exterior areas.

The all-important lawn

Do you dream of having the perfect lawn, like the ones you see on TV where the grass is the perfect shade of green and always free of weeds? Creating a show-stopping lawn is not as hard as you think and actually can be achieved fairly quickly.

If you can, it’s advised to start with a blank canvas, which could mean removing what is currently there and replacing with a new layer of topsoil that can be seeded or turfed.

At Avon Material Supplies, we offer a manufactured topsoil that is perfect for lawn restoration and makes a more affordable alternative to traditional topsoil. Our alternative topsoil can be delivered bagged or loose, whichever works best for you.

A suitable seating area

So, you’ve now got fresh grass, but the thought of ruining it with seating and tables is out of the question, therefore you will need an area away from the lawn for enjoying the sunshine and family BBQs.

This is when our other bagged aggregates may come in handy… whether it’s for creating a sub-base suitable for supporting decking or laying a decorative aggregate or shingle on pathways and seating areas.

Our ‘in stock’ bagged materials are mainly construction aggregates. However, if you require a decorative aggregate such as Cotswold chipping our associated company, AMS Nationwide can normally supply this within 1 – 2 days. For prices and availability please call our friendly Nationwide team on 01202 810938.
