It’s no surprise that when the UK was put into lockdown in March, many waste management service providers were forced to reduce their services, or in some cases cease operating altogether. This situation, coupled with many of us choosing to carry out garden, home, or business improvement projects to fill our time has (in many cases) resulted in a build-up of excess waste.
With many commercial and local authority waste management providers still offering limited services, you may be wondering how to legally and quickly dispose of this excess waste.
Read on for guidance relating to legal waste management, changes in current waste disposal methods and to learn how Avon Material Supplies (AMS) can remove your waste efficiently and in line with current legislation and government guidelines.
Current waste regulations
Whether you’re looking to dispose of commercial or domestic waste, you must do so in line with the appropriate UK legislation.
The Environmental Protection Act deals with issues relating to waste on land, defining all aspects of waste management and places a responsibility on those who create the waste to dispose of it responsibly.
As a waste producer, you must ensure that all of your waste is handled safely and within the law. This is your ‘duty of care’ and it applies to anyone who produces, imports, transports, stores, treats or disposes of controlled waste.
If you would like further guidance on the laws relating to waste disposal and how using AMS will allow you to be compliant, please call our team on 01202 579579.
Difficulties with waste management during the COVID-19 pandemic
You’re not alone if you’ve found yourself with an abundance of waste that seems almost impossible to get rid of. This may be for a few reasons:
Local bin collection suspensions – Local Councils have reported lower staffing levels as employees have been self-isolating, so many regular bin collections (particularly for garden waste bins) have been reduced or suspended. Without having a regular collection, your household and garden waste might be building up.
Closure of local tips – After lockdown measures were bought in at the end of March, all three of BCP Council’s tips were closed until further notice, which left the public stuck for a legal waste disposal solution. After May’s update, local councils have begun to reopen these services but the public has been warned that they will be extremely busy and to expect queues, so you should only visit if you are unable to safely store your waste at home.
Social distancing and self-isolation – You may be in the group of individuals that have been self-isolating or shielding and therefore have had no way of disposing of excess waste. It may also be that the thought of social distancing whilst using public waste services just doesn’t seem possible, and you would rather the safety of having your waste collected.
Our waste management services can help you

Open and enclosed skips are available in 4, 6, 8 and 12 yard sizes which can hold between 40 bin bags and up to 120 bin bags in the largest size. For larger commercial waste clearances we can supply 15, 20, 35 and 50-yard ‘roll on roll off’ (RORO) waste containers.
AMS grab hire – Our modern fleet of AMS grab lorries consists of 4, 6 & 8 wheel grab trucks, which are all available for site clearances and aggregate deliveries across Dorset and Hampshire. Depending on the truck you hire, the arm can reach from 5m up to 10m and can hold between 8 -16 tonnes of waste. Whether it’s green waste from a garden project or construction waste from a building site, we’ll be able to find the perfect grab lorry vehicle to clear your waste.
Skip bags – If you’re looking for a small-scale waste management option, our AMS bulk bags could be the solution you’re looking for.
