Changes In Equestrian Arena Rules | Avon Material Supplies

The use of shredded carpet being used in equestrian arenas has changed… How does it affect you?

One of the industries that we provide our aggregates to, in particular our medium washed sand, is equestrian arenas. But did you know that the regulations around what materials can be used on the arena floor have changed?

What’s changed?

Before last month, equestrian areas could use various materials to bulk out the arena floor. In most instances this would include shredded carpet, tyres, plastics and rubber.

However, the new legislation states that shredded carpet now can’t be used.

Why the change?

From 17th June 2021, it was announced that shredded carpet can have a negative impact on the environment and/or put the animals at risk. Within the new legislation, the synthetic fibres used in an equestrian arena must not:

  • Cause a risk to water, air, soil, plants or animals
  • Cause a nuisance through noise or odours
  • Adversely affect the countryside or places of special interest

What is the alternative?

A sound riding surface is hugely important to this industry, so it’s vital that the correct aggregates are used to protect the animals and our environment.

Our medium washed sand product has been a firm favourite and continues to provide a suitable base for equestrian arenas.

Why medium washed sand?

The fine qualities of our medium washed sand make them ideal for equestrian uses such as menages and arenas.

When compacted, this aggregate is firm enough to support the horse’s hoofs and legs, without putting too much strain on them. If a softer sand is used it won’t provide enough cushioning which can lead to injury.

The fine properties of our medium washed sand also allow for great drainage whilst also aiding moisture retention.

Purchasing our medium washed sand is also a cost effective solution, as depending on the tonnage required, you can get it delivered from as little as £23 per tonne.
