Spring Gardening Tips: 5 Uses For Our Manufactured Soil

As we hop into spring, one thing that is on everyone’s mind is getting their garden in order and ready for summer. We all have visions of a perfectly mowed lawn and flawless landscaped flower beds, but all of this takes time and patience.

With our soil product being a very popular choice for customers at the moment, we thought we would explain the top 5 uses and why you should purchase from Avon Material Supplies.

What is manufactured soil?

Before we delve into the uses of our topsoil product, it’s important for us to explain why our soil is called manufactured (as opposed to just topsoil).

Natural ‘topsoil’ is just that, it’s natural and takes many years to form depending on its environment and climate.

Manufactured topsoil is made by humans and in our case, it’s manufactured at Canford Recycling Centre, it’s produced using a blend of other soils and then washed and screened to 10mm to ensure the end product is fine and of great quality. This process helps to ensure there are very few large stones within the soil.

Many people believe that they must have natural topsoil but actually, the manufactured alternative does the exact same thing, it’s cheaper and much easier to source. So, let’s get into the uses…

Use 1: Repairing lawn damage

Is your lawn patchy? Feeling a bit unloved? Or maybe those pesky pets of yours have got the better of it, using topsoil to repair lawn damage is very common.

Simply remove the patch of the old turf that you want to fix, apply new soil and either add new seed or prepare for fresh turf. Your lawn will look as good as new in no time if you provide it with the right amount of sun and water.

Use 2: Laying turf

If you’re starting from a blank canvas, you will want to get yourself a good amount of topsoil. The soil provides great nutrients to allow your turf to root properly and quickly.

We’ve written a whole blog article about the stages of laying turf which you can read here.

Use 3: Creating a plant bed

Once you’ve got that picture-perfect lawn, you may want to think about moving onto the outskirts of your garden and a plant bed may be in your plans.

Depending on the size of your garden, purchasing bagged topsoil is ideal for this kind of job as it means you can transport the bag across the garden to where you need it rather than going back and forth to your loosely delivered topsoil pile.

  1. Start with visualising your plant bed, consider what plants you want to bloom and when they will bloom, ideally you will design one that has flowers blooming throughout the year.
  2. Consider colours that will go nicely together and the sizes of your flowers.
  3. Go flower shopping and pick up the right amount of soil.
  4. If working with a previously built flower bed, ensure you remove any weeds or grass within the bed and apply your fresh soil and rake over.
  5. If you’re starting from scratch, make sure that the soil in your flower bed is at least 6-12 inches deep to ensure that your plants and flowers have enough space for roots to grow.
  6. Add your plants!

Ta-da!

Use 4: Improving drainage

Due to the nature of our topsoil, it’s an extremely effective way to improve the drainage within your garden. If you notice that you have patches of your lawn that generally end up being a bit too soggy or build up with water easily, simply applying an additional layer of topsoil will help the water to drain.

Use 5: In your greenhouse or vegetable garden

If you’re particularly green-fingered and ready to start taking your garden to the next level then you can use our manufactured topsoil for your greenhouse or vegetable garden. As mentioned above, our topsoil provides plenty of nutrients to help your seedlings grow and flourish.
