Best Recycled Aggregates For Your Project in Lockdown | AMS

What are the best recycled aggregates for your lockdown project?

The current lockdown measures have resulted in many of us tackling various outdoor landscaping or DIY projects at home. For example, you might have treated yourself to a hot tub and want to create a patio area to enjoy it on, or maybe you have decided to gravel your driveway, lay an artificial lawn or spruce up your vegetable garden.

During the lockdown, AMS (Avon Material Supplies) have delivered hundreds of bagged aggregates to homes across Bournemouth and Poole.

In this article, we’ve compiled a list of the recycled aggregates we sell in Dorset and which have proved the most popular during the lockdown (so far). To skip to the section you are most interested in, please click on the appropriate link below.

Topsoil alternative

One of the biggest sellers – Our manufactured topsoil alternative which has been used extensively in commercial landscaping projects for many years has now become a firm favourite with gardeners across Dorset. This affordable substitute for traditional topsoil is available in 10mm and 20mm varieties and ideally suited to:

  • Plant beds
  • Repairing lawn damage
  • Improving drainage
  • Turfing

Top tip – When using our topsoil alternative for flower beds, clear the area first, then lightly turn over the top 5 inches of the existing soil before putting your new topsoil alternative down. This will loosen the ground, giving your plants or grass seed the best chance of success!

Our scalpings are used by many builders and contractors in sub-bases because they’re great for evening out foundations. However, scalpings aren’t just useful for commercial applications, they’re also ideal as a base for your home driveway, pathway or patio.

The 40mm scalpings sub-base material we offer can be delivered loose or in bulk bags in 1 to 20 tonnes loads. For construction sites or residential properties where space is a concern, we can offload aggregates using a grab truck.

Top tip – If you’re using scalpings as a base for a driveway or patio, ensure that you dig out any areas of the ground that are softer than others before you lay the scalpings. Scalping bases are flexible and will sink into soft areas, making dips in your driveway.

The recycled shingle products we offer are hugely popular as they are suitable for use ins a wide variety of applications. We can provide 10, 20 and 40mm varieties that are ideal for:

  • Driveways*
  • Paths*
  • General landscaping
  • Drainage

Top tip – Shingle can act as a fairly good weed suppressant, but the odd determined weed will grow through. For a weed-free driveway or path, pair shingle with a weed control membrane underneath.

*This is a recycled product so may not be suitable as a decorative top-layer. We are happy to provide a free sample or you can visit our inert facility at Canford Recycling Centre to view the product. Alternatively, if you are looking for a decorative shingle we can source and supply a choice of primary and decorative aggregates, please contact us for more information.

Sharp sand / grit

Our washed sharp sand is another type of aggregate that has proved to be a popular choice for a variety of lockdown projects. It’s the perfect aggregate for use in the laying paving blocks or slabs to create a patio or seating area.

Additionally, due to its ability to be mixed with cement, sharp sand can be used in the production of strong concrete, which can be used for various applications that may include;

  • Shed bases
  • Installing walls or fences
  • Building a wall

Learn more about these applications in our recent Guide To Using Concrete At Home During Lockdown. Alternatively, call AMS on 01202 579579 for advice and prices.

We can deliver both! If your project is already on the go and you’re happy for the aggregate to be dropped directly into the desired area, loose load deliveries are ideal. Alternatively, we can supply your aggregates in strong, durable bags for easier storage on-site or for homes and sites where space or access is limited.
